Untold History of Hindol (1): Under the Patra and Shamal dynasties

800AD to 1100AD.... This is the period that Hindol and Odisha were Ruled by the Sulki Kings about whom very little has been researched,The empire is believed to have extended from Chilka and Banpur in Odisha to the West Midnapore district in Bengal.
Before 860AD Hindol is ruled by 'Kandhas'. They called themselves 'Sardar' and ruled the state. Apart from Hindol, the Kandhas were also active at Boudh, Dasapalla, Narasinghapur and Anugul.
The cult prevalent at that time was of pillar worship and the presiding deities were in the form of pillars, either stone or wood and over time have been assimilated into Hinduism folds representing the Shiva and Durga now.
Many copper plates of that time indicate the existance of the Stambha Raja's, mainly Kulastambha Deb and Ranastambha Deb, and the "Hindol Copper Plate", which is now in the collection of the Patna museum in Bihar indicates a grant of land by one of the Stambha kings to a certain Brahmin. The same grant also stands etched on stone at Chitalpur on the back of deity Maa Stambeswari.
The remnanents of this pillar worship culture can be found in Chitalpur village, Bompa village and Kunua village of Hindol and at Talmul village of Angul and many other places in the vicinity.

Under the Patras   In 860AD a man named 'Banamali Patra' came from Khordha and defeated the Kandhas Sardar 'Daini'. He called himself 'Dalapati' and dominated over the state. After the death of 'Banamali Patra' his sons 'Ramachandra Patra' and 'Narasingh Patra' indulged in fight for property and ruled the state in two parts. 'Narasingh Patra' killed 'Ramachandra Patra' by cheating and became the 'Dalapati' of the full state. During his tenure he appointed the village head in every village and termed them as 'Bahalia'.      In 1342AD 'Hari Shamal' became the 'Dalapati'. His ancestors and he didn't paid tax to the King of Odisha, so the king sent his Senapati(commander) 'Narasinha Patra' with some soldiers. They collected tax and looted some villages then get back to Khurda via Baramba. During this time 'Dudurkote' was the capital.
After the death of 'Hari Shamal', his elder son 'Shankar Shamal' and younger son 'Murari Shamal' ruled the state 45 years & 32 years respectively.
In 1463AD 'Chandra Shamal' became the 'Dalapati'. In his tenure Angul king attacked and occupied some area. He had seven children.
After his death his elder son 'Dhanurjay Shamal' became 'Dalapati' and his other 6 sons 'Nidhi Shamal', 'Dalei Shamal', 'Pindib Shamal', 'Kapil Shamal', 'Gopinath Shamal' and 'Subuddhi Shamal' helped him.
